Prepare for the New York State 47-Hour Armed Security Guard Course with focused pre-training designed to help students build the foundational knowledge, firearm-handling skills, and confidence needed before beginning the full armed guard firearms program.
This pre-training is ideal for individuals who are new to firearms, have limited shooting experience, or simply want additional preparation before attending the NYS 47-Hour Armed Guard Course.
Training focuses on reinforcing the fundamentals of safe and responsible firearm handling while introducing students to the skills they will be expected to develop during formal armed security guard firearms training.
Firearm safety and responsible handling
Range safety procedures and commands
Proper grip, stance, and shooting position
Sight alignment and sight picture
Trigger control and follow-through
Loading and unloading procedures
Safe handgun manipulation
Magazine changes and basic firearm operation
Marksmanship fundamentals
Identification and correction of common shooting errors
Introduction to course-of-fire expectations
Individual coaching based on the student's experience and skill level
This training is recommended for new or inexperienced shooters preparing to enroll in the NYS 47-Hour Armed Guard Course, as well as students who want additional practice before beginning their required firearms training.
Important: This is a preparatory training session and does not replace, satisfy, or provide credit toward the required New York State 47-Hour Armed Security Guard Firearms Course. Successful completion of all applicable New York State training and licensing requirements remains the responsibility of the student.

This comprehensive training is a state-mandated requirement for those looking to become armed security guards in New York. Combining classroom instruction with live range training, this course prepares you for real-world security situations.
Student Brings:
Pistol, semi-auto or revolver (.38 or higher for revolvers). Calibers accepted: .9mm, 40, and 45. 22s, 380s, and smaller calibers are not permitted.
Ear and eye protection
Duty holster and duty belt. The holster must be made of Kydex material: no cloth or leather.
20 boxes of FMJ ammunition. Please call our office before purchasing ammunition: 716-622-7168.
Three 10-round magazines. If you have 8-round mags, bring at least 5.
Gun cleaning kit

This is an 8-hour course required by New York State as the first step in obtaining a security guard registration card from the New York State Department of State. The course provides the student with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics covered in this course include the role of the security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergencies, communications and public relations, access control, and ethics and conduct. The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course.
An introductory course that must be completed before applying for a security guard registration card

This foundational course must be completed within 90 days of employment and is designed to equip new security guards with the skills needed to protect people and property effectively.

For currently armed security guards, this annual state-required training includes classroom instruction and hands-on firearm practice to ensure your skills remain sharp.
Course Breakdown:
Classroom Training (3 Hours): Legal use of force and deadly physical force
Range Training (5 Hours): Practical firearm training and handgun qualification
Final Written Exam: Covers use of force laws and firearm safety

The security guard training school develops this 8-hour course, which must be completed to maintain and renew a security guard registration card. The course is structured to provide students with up-to-date, enhanced information on the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. The eight-hour annual in-service course is comprised of 8 hours of instruction that may include 2 hours of security-related elective topics. A security guard must complete two annual in-service courses in their two-year registration period.
Must be completed annually within 12 months of completing the 16-hour On-the-Job Training Course
Mandatory for security license renewal
Must be completed and on file with the Department of Licensing office before submitting a renewal application
